  George Bernard Shaw, who zealously kept control over his plays and how they were being treated, agreed to let librettists Leopold Jacobson and Rudolf Bernauer, along with composer Oscar Straus, create an operetta, The Chocolate Soldier, based on his 1894 play, Arms and the Man, about a soldier who prefers eating candies to making war.

  When a young Serbian soldier, who carries only chocolate in his ammunition pouch, stumbles into their lives, the lonely women are all very taken with him. They help him to escape the clutches of the Bulgarian forces. However, when the war is over, and the Bulgarians' menfolk have returned, things grow complicated.

• Into the Woods – Stephen Sondheim

  "Into the Woods" is a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine that weaves together several classic fairy tales, exploring the consequences of wishes and the complexities of human desires.

  The musical follows a childless Baker and his wife, and their quest to reverse a curse placed on them by a witch, intertwining their story with those of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel.

  The show was nominated for ten Tony Awards at the 42nd Tony Awards, and won three: Best Original Score (Stephen Sondheim), Best Book (Lapine) and Best Actress in a Musical (Gleason).

Voices of the Valley Fall Concert – The Spice of Life 百味人生. The theme for this performance is to celebrate the diversity and richness that makes life so extraordinary.

We are proud to present the U.S. Premiere of two contemporary works: 百年好合 (Happily Ever After) and 茶餐廳 (Hong Kong Bistro), by Warren Lee 李偉安, a revered concert pianist, composer, and educator from Hong Kong. We are also staging The Seasonings, a satirical work that parodies traditional classical music by PDQ Bach, a pseudonym of Peter Schickele (1935-2024), an American composer, educator, radio show host, and parodist.

We are excited to reconnect with our audience in our first public performance since the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the conclusion of Voices of the Valley’s 20th Anniversary concert last year, where we selected some of the most memorable music from the past, this year, we are starting our 2019-20 season with a program featuring a refreshing combination of modern and classics choral works that pay tribute to the great masters. We are also very excited to be part of the Foothill Presbyterian Church concert series this year; and we look forward to turning a new page with you.

Chinese American composer Chen Yi, a professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, is best known for weaving western and eastern influences into her compositions. In Riding on a Mule 趕牲靈, the composer puts a modern twist to the pentatonic ShanXi 山西folk tune with the percussive sounds of spoken syllables. Under the Mid-Autumn Moon 水調歌頭 and Reminisce of the Battle of Red Cliffs 念奴嬌 赤壁懷古 are both by contemporary Hong Kong composers. The former is a quiet toast to the moon, a well-wishing to the beloved ones afar bathed under the very same silvery beams; the latter is an epic account of ancient battle, fought in the raging waters of the ChangJiang against the dramatic backdrop of the red cliffs. The mood of the two songs cannot be more different, yet they both contemplate the impermanence of life, with its joy and sorrow, triumph and losses.
